Wednesday Devotion: Generous

The early Church in Acts took my breath away. Their generosity and devotion stirred my spirit with longing and conviction. Why don't we see that same fire today?

Then the words of Hebrews washed over me - "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." His power didn't diminish over time.

So where is that contagious generosity rooted? It starts and ends with God's reckless, lavish love for us. While we wandered in darkness, He sacrificed everything to bring us into the light. As Paul said, "God demonstrates His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

Can you imagine? The God of the universe, slain for our salvation. Adopted as sons and daughters. Given the Spirit's indwelling presence. Radically changed from the inside out - never to be the same.

In light of such scandalous grace, how could we not live differently? How could we not pour ourselves out for others, as Christ poured Himself out for us?

I've witnessed this kind of extravagant generosity in the Church before. People selling possessions, giving sacrificially, living by faith as conduits of God's love. In those times, God's wonder and power shone bright.

True generosity has nothing to do with what's in our bank account. It has everything to do with how overwhelmed we are by God's love. When His lavish grace takes our breath away, our hands and hearts can't help but follow His lead.

Let's pray for fresh revelation of Christ's love. For eyes to see and spirits to soar. For hearts spilled out as conduits of His reckless generosity. The same power that fueled the early Church lives in us. May we burn with that holy fire today!
